Miami Drunk Driving LawyerDue to the alarming amount of drunk driving accidents that occur every year, many states including Florida have began ordering those who are convicted of drunk driving to have an ignition interlock system install in their cars at their own expense. An ignition interlock system is an electronic breath analyzer that measures the blood alcohol content (BAC) of the driver to determine if the driver is capable to drive on the roads safely. The system will not allow the driver to startup the car if the driver’s BAC is above 0.05. However, for those who are convicted of drunk driving for the first time, it is not mandatory to have an ignition interlock system unless the DUI defendant either had a BAC of 0.20 or a minor in the car at the time of the incident. In addition, if a judge believes that one is needed, then the judge can order the defendant to have the device installed in their car. The cost to a convicted person for an ignition interlock device is $70 for the installation, $67.50 for monthly monitoring, and $100 refundable deposit. That means if you were ordered to have an ignition interlock system for one year, it will cost you $980.
