BOCA RATON - Records show that James D. Baker, the man accused of driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 on Friday, was cited for at least three traffic infractions in the last 10 months.
He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday regarding an April 12 DUI arrest from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, according to Palm Beach County court records.
The records also show that on May 3, he was charged with driving with a suspended license. Florida criminal record shows that Miami-Dade police charged him with reckless driving on Aug. 12.
Last Friday, Baker, 64, was headed northbound in a red Jaguar in the southbound high-occupancy vehicle lane near Yamato Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A Chevrolet truck swerved to avoid colliding head-on with Baker's car, but overturned, ejecting the three rear passengers, including Christina A. Duvalsaint, 23, of Plantation, died at the scene. She was not wearing her seat belt.
Two passengers were taken to Delray Medical Center and were in serious condition. Two other passengers said they didn't need hospital treatment, said Frank Correggio, spokesman for Boca Raton Fire-Rescue.
Investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor and if Baker was wearing a seat belt.
Drivers in two nearby vehicles only suffered minor injuries.
The two crashes blocked all I-95 southbound lanes for about three hours Friday while Florida Highway Patrol investigated the incident.
